Turkey, which was a net exporter until 1985, maintained this title until 1993, but after the rapid development and demand increase in the textile industry, it became a net importer. Currently, Turkey has become importing more than half of its consumption. In terms of statistics, unfortunately, no single source can be considered a 100% accurate database. This is even more evident in the agricultural product figures. In our country, import and export figures are recorded by TUIK through customs. However, we cannot rely on a single source for our production figures. For this, we obtain a common figure by blending the data obtained from our consultations with the Farmer Registration System, the sales figures from seed producers and the registered registration figures obtained from the Exchanges and the major farmers and ginners in the cotton growing regions. Although cotton production covers a period of 6-7 months from planting to harvest -with the effect of the fact that a significant part of cotton production is done in the northern hemisphere- the period starting with August 1 and ending on July 31 of the other year is considered as a season in the name of a common statistical language. and both years are specified together. (Example: 2019-2020 season)
Estimations of Turkey's production, import and consumption figures by seasons are as follows. (Figures are based on 1000 tons)
